VBAC in South Florida: What You Need to Know

If you've had a previous cesarean birth and are hoping for a vaginal birth this time, you're not alone.

Many families throughout South Florida are interested in having a VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean), but often find themselves overwhelmed by conflicting information, hospital policies, and questions about whether they're even a candidate.

The good news? For many women, a VBAC is a safe and reasonable option.

What Is a VBAC?

VBAC stands for Vaginal Birth After Cesarean. It refers to giving birth vaginally after having had a previous cesarean birth.

Every pregnancy and birth history is unique, which is why eligibility for a VBAC should always be discussed with your healthcare provider.

Factors that may influence whether a VBAC is recommended include:

  • The reason for your previous cesarean

  • The type of uterine incision used during surgery

  • The number of previous cesareans you've had

  • Your overall health and pregnancy history

  • The policies of your provider and birth location

Is VBAC Safe?

For many women with a prior low-transverse cesarean incision, a trial of labor after cesarean (TOLAC) can be a safe option.

According to major medical organizations, including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), many women with one prior cesarean are candidates for VBAC.

The decision is highly individualized and should be made in partnership with your healthcare provider after discussing your specific risks, benefits, and circumstances.

Why Do Some Women Choose a VBAC?

Every family's reasons are different.

Some women choose to pursue a VBAC because they want:

  • A shorter recovery period

  • To avoid another major abdominal surgery

  • More mobility after birth

  • An opportunity to experience vaginal birth

  • Fewer surgical risks in future pregnancies

Others simply want to explore all available options before scheduling a repeat cesarean.

There is no right or wrong choice. The best birth plan is one that is informed and aligned with your family's goals and medical needs.

Finding a VBAC-Supportive Provider in South Florida

One of the biggest factors in a successful VBAC journey is finding a provider who is genuinely supportive of VBAC.

A provider may technically "allow" VBAC while still having policies or practices that make achieving one more difficult.

When interviewing providers, consider asking:

  • How often do you support VBAC patients?

  • What are your VBAC success rates?

  • Under what circumstances do you recommend a repeat cesarean?

  • How do you approach inductions for VBAC patients?

  • What hospital do you deliver at?

  • Are there any gestational age limits for VBAC attempts?

These conversations can help you better understand whether a provider's philosophy aligns with your goals.

How a Doula Can Support a VBAC

While a doula cannot guarantee a vaginal birth, many families find that having continuous support helps them feel more confident and informed throughout the process.

As a doula, I support VBAC families by:

  • Providing evidence-based information

  • Helping families prepare for labor

  • Discussing comfort measures and labor positions

  • Supporting communication and informed decision-making

  • Offering emotional encouragement throughout pregnancy and labor

  • Supporting partners so they feel confident and involved

Most importantly, I help families feel supported regardless of how their birth unfolds.

Your VBAC Journey Is Your Own

Whether you have a successful VBAC, choose a repeat cesarean, or your plans change during labor, your birth experience matters.

A successful birth is not defined by the way your baby is born. It is defined by feeling informed, respected, supported, and involved in the decisions surrounding your care.

If you're exploring VBAC options in Broward County or Miami-Dade, I'd love to help you navigate your choices and prepare for your birth with confidence.
